Happy Halloween!
We began our morning with a morning message, followed by active start. A word problem was presented to the students which stumped almost every group - except for one! We continued with our array cities. Students had to finish the sentence "The mysterious footprints led to..." This afternoon was filled with snacks and The Incredibles! Students participated in math stations throughout the day as well. During The City of Ember, Lina's grandmother passed away - and Lizzie is acting strange with a bag of groceries in her hand ... Students continued creating their array cities in math, before Mrs. Hrousalas presented a problem solving question! During science students guessed what weather vocabulary word was on their back! We also completed an anchor chart for the different types of clouds we may see in the sky! Check out @starbucksandteach on Instagram to view it! We ended the day in the computer lab researching our social studies region. Students listened to a book about the Eagle and the sacred teaching of love. We discussed how love is displayed in many different ways such as loving a type of food, a family member, or something that you do! In sketch books, students began drawing out their math array cities. This afternoon we planned and discussed about our classroom celebrations throughout the school year (parents please refer to the email that was sent this afternoon about bringing in a specific food). One final art class was provided to finish their "scream" art. The following is the rubric for the project AND the real art piece to use as reference. Creative Expression - displayed creativity and originality (chose a character) - added their own twist to "The Scream" Art Language and Tools - has a contrast in the lines (free hand scribble - sky and water, and uses ruler for the board walk) - has a contrast in the colours (warm sunset colours in the sky, and darker browns for the boardwalk) - the colours are blended and shaded using the same direction - the main character is bright and remains the focal point Valuing Artistic Experience - remaining on task? - did you follow instructions? **Scream art due Mon Oct. 29th **Bring back spelling books Mon Oct. 29th **Picture orders due Thurs Nov. 1st **Field trip Fri. WSO presented to the school this morning before lunch. What beautiful sounds the instruments make. This afternoon students had a full hour to continue researching their assigned Canadian region for their S.S. project. During computer time, we continued to research our Canadian Region for a social studies presentation. Two books were read this afternoon to learn more about the seven sacred teachings. We discussed about honesty and respect! Groups were assigned during health to come up with an active start game to teach to the rest of the class! During creative writing, we practiced expanding ideas by including more details! This afternoon we had a gallery walk within our class to view and read classmates' life lines. We tried to make a connection, or wondered about a fact! During The City of Ember, Lina and Doon saw a mysterious figure go into the locked door they found in the pipe works! **PARENTS: students were given permission slips for our up coming field trip to the Planetarium on Friday Nov. 2nd (A.M.) please sign and return back! This morning we corrected the factors homework, followed by working on their spelling word work!
We had D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read) before lunch, followed by The City of Ember... we discussed how predictions and prior knowledge from what we read assists us with our comprehension! We had our first taste of math stations - these will be continued next day 4. We corrected the math homework this morning before bus ridership. We reviewed what a factor tree is to assist our knowledge for the homework!
During The City of Ember, as a class we wrote down some vocabulary and used strategies to see if we truly understood the meaning. Students worked in their spelling groups and looked for words with silent consonants, or long a's. This afternoon we read a book about the second sacred teaching - wisdom and how the beaver is connected to this! During The City of Ember, Doon went to the library to see if there were books about fire and ran into Lina - who is asking for Doon's help!
