Students completed another "mad minute" of quick multiplication facts this morning, followed by a discussion on how we can sort sets of integers.
I began to read aloud the novel, The City of Ember to 6B. I am very excited to get more into this book - the first few pages hooked us in! We had our second successful T.U.S.C. meeting today. The next one won't be until October 11th due to the long weekend and a PD that I will be away for. I expect well prepared T.U.S.C. presentations for the third meeting! Students began to think of the different advantages and disadvantages of being active physically, socially, and emotionally. This will assist their thinking for a persuasive activity next health class! Parents, please ask your child for the immunization note I have given them today. This is a reminder that immunizations will be occurring on Oct. 6th! **Reminders: Classification Mystery for science is due MONDAY! ** Me in a Box is due Thursday, Oct. 5th Have a good weekend, and enjoy the sunshine!

Wednesday Sept. 27th
In the morning 6B worked on their daily edit, had their pictures taken, and worked on number lines with positive and negative whole numbers. We had snack with our learning buddies in the morning as well. Thursday Sept. 28th In the morning we worked on the third photo of estimation 180, as well as comparing positive and negative integers. Students were introduced to a small project called "Me in a Box". Students are to choose a shoe box, or a bag (that represents them) to include a total of 8 items. Below is the list of items that are to be included; #1 I am From .... Poem (students completed this in class) #2 lyrics from a song #3 a photo (this can be anything!) #4-8 will be anything else that will represent the student examples; a baseball because they love to play and watch baseball, or a certificate for completing a task, etc. Students will be presenting these boxes to a small group that will consist of their classmates and a few grade 2 learning buddies. This assignment is to help them introduce themselves to their learning buddies. This is due THURSDAY OCTOBER 5th. If you have any questions please refer to your child's pink "Me in a Box" booklet, or feel free to email me as well! In the afternoon, we began to look at Canada around Confederation (1867) before our Terry Fox walk! **Reminder that T.U.S.C. presentations are TOMORROW! ** Wear orange for Orange T-shirt Day! We had our second Estimation 180 today. Students used their prior knowledge to assist their thinking.
We had indoor recess all afternoon because of the gloomy rain. Students reflected on how they can have a safe and fun indoor recess when this occurs. Students began their good copies of classification mysteries. Students chose to work in a pair or individually. These will be displayed during Tri-Conferences! If students did not complete these, they are for homework and due MONDAY Oct.2nd. Students had time to review their provinces and capital cities through an interactive online game, followed by a walk around the school to clear their minds before their short quiz! **Tomorrow is picture day and Show and Save books are due! **Cross Country meet is rescheduled for next week. Stay tuned for the date. **Thursday afternoon is the Terry Fox Assembly and Walk! Today we began to look at where we would find positive and negative integers on number lines.
We started our Daily Edit booklets - a lot of students wanted to work on their grammar and punctuation in ELA this year! We will be completing at least one edit a day until Christmas. We had a quick review on Canada's geography during Social Studies. Students will have a period and half with the laptops to practice labelling the provinces and cities tomorrow. There will be a small quiz at the end of the period on the geography of Canada. During Science we went outside and looked for 15 (or more) items to create a "classification mystery". Students will have time tomorrow to complete this task. ***Reminders: Tomorrow afternoon is the final Cross Country meet at Varsity View Picture Day is this WEDNESDAY! Make sure you wear your best smile Thursday afternoon is the Terry Fox assembly and run T.U.S.C. is on Friday the 29th, along with Orange T-shirt Day! We began to look at Estimation 180 by Mr. Stadel. This exercise will assist student's estimation and number sense throughout the year! We looked at his height today.
The students had their first math stations today! These stations will include using the different operations, number sense, and place value! Students reviewed their T.U.S.C. jobs for the meeting next FRIDAY. In the afternoon we took advantage of the sun and played four square as a class community after silent reading. During science we looked at multiple ways of how to organize different classifications. Students looked at strategies on how to make an estimation in math.
We had our first T.U.S.C. meeting today, which was a success! Great job everyone! Our next meeting is Friday Sept. 29th. Students will go down the list for their next job, we will review their jobs tomorrow! Students practiced their place values once again today with a little assistance from number fans.
Each student started a poem called I am From... This poem has prompts to assist their ideas. If students did not complete this in class today, they may choose to bring it home for homework tonight or finish it in class tomorrow. During our only ELA class tomorrow, students will choose between practicing their T.U.S.C. presentations OR complete their I am From... poems. We had an assembly today hosted by the Canadian artist, Ryan Laird! He discussed the importance of being an upstander and also performed. A few students (youngest member in the family) brought home a note regarding Super Lunch - parents please read this over. ***REMINDER THAT OUR FIRST T.U.S.C. PRESENTATION IS TOMORROW!!!! Student's received new timetables for the school year. I have updated it under the "timetable" tab of the weebly.
This morning we reviewed a bit of the T.U.S.C. expectations for our FIRST MEETING THURSDAY SEPT. 21st. Parents please review my expectations with your child and sign the agreement in the "handbook". To view more details, please check the 'ELA' tab on the weebly or your child's yellow duo tang! Students chose their first job for Thursday and from there we will rotate jobs every day 1! Every day 5's we will be combing classes with 2 Bater for learning buddies during slot 4. Today we played a name game and answered "would you rather" questions to get to know each other. The students completed a math questionnaire for Strong Beginnings. We reviewed the place values and completed our first "mad minute" in math.
We have finalized our classroom contract that will be posted next week! With the zip lock bags that the students brought in for science, we began to learn about classification for Diversity of Living things! We will continue this activity next science class. Strong Beginnings is Friday and Monday by appointment. I hope everyone enjoys their long weekend and I will see you when you come in! *Just a friendly reminder for the students who are in cross country, our first meet is TUESDAY SEPT 19th in the afternoon! Please dress weather appropriate and bring lots of water! 6B spent the morning in a morning meeting to review behaviour expectations while a guest is in the classroom, went over important announcements, and played a game called "Do you want to buy a duck?" that taught us how important it is to make eye contact while speaking to someone.
Students had their first library class today and chose a few books for silent reading. We looked at the different advantages a home team may have during a sporting event - stay tuned for how we will connect this idea to our social contract! Students are to bring a ziplock bag (sandwich size) to school tomorrow with 5 different items from their house. It can be anything school appropriate that will fit into the bag. We will be using these for our first science class tomorrow! Students are also to review the song "Bigger Than That" by Ryan Laird for our Bully Prevention Assembly next Wednesday. |
